What is The Art Deco Weekend All About?

For those of you who don’t know what the Art Deco Weekend is all about, it’s a tribute to the Art Deco buildings and architecture of Miami Beach. The event was created 45 years back by the Miami Design Preservation League to showcase those beautiful Art Deco buildings of the south beach neighborhood.

The purpose here is to promote and preserve the art for our future generations. The League’s earlier work was a catalyst that developed the world-class and vibrant city that we see today.

Event Funding, Partners & Sponsors

The major portion of funding and support for this event comes from the management of City of Miami Beach, along with the mayor and commissioners of the city, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City’s Cultural Arts Council.

Festival partners include Miami Herald, Miami New Times, and El Nuevo Herald. And the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau will be the marketing partner.

Event Activities

Various activities will take place during the Art Deco Weekend.

Walking Tours

Different walking tours include the Ocean Drive Architectural Tour, introducing you to Art Deco.

You can hear lectures on Art Deco Radio from experts in the field. They will guide you about the designers’ extraordinary creativity contribution from way back in the 1930s. There will be lectures about the art of fake news when the lecturers take you back in time to 1938. It was when radio listeners in the US heard about the infamous meteor strike and various others.

Classic car show

The Antique Automobile Club of America (Southern Florida Region) will hold a classic car show. If you are a classic car enthusiast, this is the show you must not miss. You will see some of the classics from the past and see how they contributed to the designs that we see today.

Various exhibitions will be part of this Art Deco Weekend as well. One of the exhibitions will feature the life work of Morris Lapidus, and some of his work is directly related to retail design works. Aerial Vision of Wolfsonian-FIU will discuss how the early 20th century inventions of skyscrapers and airplanes stood for the embodiment of mankind’s greatest achievements.

Live Music

You will see Troy Anderson and the Hot Five in action with their tunes. You can also participate in dance lessons conducted by Gypsy Juls and Yuval Hod, who are the four-time world champions.

In addition, the French Horn Collective will perform energetic Gypsy Jazz French music through the event, the beach, and many others.
